Climate of Telangana

Telangana has a predominantly tropical, hot and semi-arid climate, strongly influenced by its location on the Deccan Plateau. The state's elevation, terrain, seasonal movement of the monsoon and variation in rainfall create noticeable differences in temperature, vegetation, agriculture and water availability across the region.

Telangana lies in the central part of the Deccan Plateau, with much of the state at an elevation of around 300 to 600 metres above sea level. The plateau generally rises towards the west and southwest and slopes gradually towards the east and northeast. This varied terrain, together with latitude and monsoon patterns, contributes to regional differences in climate.
The climate of Telangana is broadly characterised by hot summers, a Southwest Monsoon season, a post-monsoon transition and relatively mild winters.
The Seasonal Cycle of Telangana
Summer
Summer is generally the hottest and driest period in Telangana, particularly during April and May.
Temperatures rise considerably across the interior plateau, and daytime temperatures commonly reach the upper 30s °C during periods of intense heat. The interior location of Telangana means that the state does not receive the same maritime influence as India's coastal regions.
As summer progresses, increasing atmospheric moisture and pre-monsoon thunderstorms provide the transition towards the Southwest Monsoon.

Southwest Monsoon
The Southwest Monsoon is the most important rainfall season in Telangana.
Most of the state's annual rainfall is received between June and September. Moisture-bearing monsoon winds bring rainfall across the Deccan Plateau, replenishing soil moisture, streams, rivers, tanks and reservoirs.
Rainfall is not evenly distributed throughout the state. Northern and eastern parts generally receive more rainfall, while parts of southern and southwestern Telangana are comparatively drier.
The monsoon therefore plays a major role in determining:

Post-Monsoon Season
After the Southwest Monsoon begins to withdraw, Telangana enters a transitional period during approximately October and November.
Temperatures gradually become more moderate, while occasional rainfall may continue in some areas.
This period is important for agriculture because residual soil moisture and late-season rainfall can influence crop development. The condition of tanks, reservoirs and groundwater following the monsoon also determines water availability during the subsequent dry season.

Winter
Winter is generally the most moderate season in Telangana.
From approximately November to February, temperatures decline, particularly during the night and early morning.
The interior plateau can experience noticeably cooler mornings because Telangana is located away from the moderating influence of the sea. Northern and higher-elevation areas can experience cooler conditions than lower and more urbanised areas.
The combination of elevation, dry air and clear skies can produce significant differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Rainfall Across Telangana
Rainfall is one of the most important geographic controls on Telangana's landscape.
There is a broad pattern of higher rainfall towards northern and eastern Telangana and comparatively lower rainfall across parts of southern and southwestern Telangana.
